Message from the Superintendent
Nearly eleven hundred students attend the Newport School District in grades kindergarten through twelve and in our Homelink. Every day parents and guardians entrust us with the care and education of those eleven hundred students. What a privilege and honor for our staff. A solid educational system is the key to a brighter future not only for our students but for all of society. Our district Mission Statement states our goal as
Educate to Participate, In School and In Life.
Together we are growing tomorrow's citizens.
Since Spring Break, several exciting events have occurred. First of all, have you noticed a new structure on our campus...a very large structure? The white pole building with the red roof is under construction thanks to several large grants and a lot of hard work by staff and local citizens to house our two fire trucks. Newport High School has a very active Fire Science Program that is part of our Career and Technical Education (CTE) department. The building will also contain a storage room, a classroom and restroom facilities.
Soon you will see a lot of activity at the Don Ellersick Memorial Stadium thanks to a grant the county and the school district just received from the state Recreation and Conservation Funding Board. The purpose of the grant is to upgrade the dirt track to an all-weather surface and relocate event areas. By moving the event areas, the interior of the track will be suitable for a practice soccer field. The resulting "top-notch" facility will be available for school district and the community use. Our hope is that the project will be ready in time for Newport's award winning

in school districts across the state. Students in grade three through high school take assessments in a variety of subjects including reading, writing, math and science. Our students traditionally score higher than the state average even though we have a high percentage of low-income households. Education is valued in our community and it shows by the level of family involvement in our schools.
As always, I thank you for your interest in the Newport School District and welcome your comments. I can be reached at teresavonmarbod@newport.wednet.edu
